Who IS Who’s Your Mama?
My name is Corinne Mockler and I am a graphic designer by day and a fierce fighter for the creative rights of my fellow mamas by night. Motherhood did not come easily to me at first…and one of the hardest aspects of it was feeling like my creative identity was gone—there was no longer any time (much less, energy) left for me to fulfill those parts of myself that I needed to feel whole. But I felt guilty and selfish for even thinking about missing my creative practice, so I remained restless and unsatisfied and unhappy.
But then something very important happened: I realized that not only were there other mamas out there who felt as I did, but there also were a lot of us, and as soon as I discovered this almost-secret “club” I wanted that conversation to continue, and to get bigger, and louder. So when my son was about a year and a half old, I started the Who’s Your Mama Podcast*, where I interview fellow mamas who are unapologetically making time for a wide variety of activities that make them feel fulfilled, as individuals, outside of motherhood. Not only have I found a new creative hobby, but I also get to have fascinating, validating conversations, while adding to the larger (and ever-growing) narrative of what’s acceptable for motherhood in today’s society.
Emboldened by these conversations, I created The Who’s Your Mama (Re)Discovering Creativity After Motherhood Workbook, a framework of reflections, insights, and actions for maintaining a creative identity while raising a family.
The process within is based on my own personal journey to where I am now: At a place where I can easily ask for (and often just announce) the time and space that I need to exist as an autonomous, creative, and sane individual. And the realization that allowing space for my creative practice has actually resulted in me bringing my best self back to motherhood and to my family, to all of my relationships, to my work, to every aspect of my life. This state didn’t come easy, but hopefully those steps and missteps—often backward, sometimes forward, but ever onward—will allow me to make another mother’s journey back to herself a little easier.
The workbook is also available in a fillable (and refillable!) PDF version and as video lessons. And I’ve also started hosting local (Portland, ME) workshops – be sure to sign up for my Stay Creative newsletter to stay in-the-know on the next gathering!
